General Duties Include
Major CrimeFormed in October 2005, the Major Crime Unit is currently comprised of two members. The Unit deals with occurrences that require specialized and /or extended periods of investigation into reports of murder, manslaughter, serious assaults including sexual assaults, major break and enters, car thefts etc. The Unit also organizes and conducts search and seizures pertaining to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. The Major Crime Unit monitors criminal activity and offender trends, as well as providing assistance to local businesses by identifying problems of criminal activity such as fraud, theft, counterfeiting, and internal thefts and formulates solutions to benefit the security of these businesses. Domestic ViolenceCumberland County Interagency Committee on Family Violence is an organization that is dedicated in reducing the domestic violence in Cumberland County. With zero tolerance and the supervision of our domestic violence liaisons officer, Cst. Frederick Welsh, Springhill Police Officer's are educated in the procedures surrounding this matter. Working closely with Victim and Family Services, the community of Springhill does offer protection and security for those that are victim to domestic violence. School Liaison ProgramThe Springhill Police Service attaches importance to the imminent future of our youths. We are committed to working hand-in-hand with the younger generation, through our schools and through the School Liaison Program. Police representatives, the school principal, staff and students, work closely together in both developing and participating in plans to address the concerns from both the schools and the students. Community Relations"The mission of the Springhill Police Service is to work in concert with the citizens of Springhill to maintain a safe and peaceful community." To ensure that we stick by this mission, the community policing coordinator, Cst. Ken Jackson, ensures a presence at a variety of committees in and for the community such as Crime Stoppers, MADD, and the Police Association of Nova Scotia, while working closely with the regular patrol section. Cst. Jackson's duties include the preparation and presentation of various proactive crime prevention programs in the schools, businesses, and with the inhabitants of this community. He also has established a Senior Citizen Safety Program, which includes Vial for Life, home security and other personal security programs. |

The Patrol Section is a foundation for the Springhill Police Service and provides 24 hour, 365 days of the year, community policing. Officers are divided into four platoons. Each platoon consists of a Deputy Chief, Sergeant, Corporal, and a Senior Constable. Each senior officer is partnered up with another experienced Constable. Each member works 12 hour scheduled shifts.
