Solid WasteThe collection of residential solid waste is coordinated through the Engineering and Public Works Department. Working with local contractor G K Hunter Ltd. and the Cumberland Central Landfill Facility at Little Forks, solid waste collection service is provided to all Town residential properties with three or fewer dwelling units. Working under a new Solid Waste Management Strategy that conforms to Nova Scotia Environment, solid waste collection is based on separation of solid waste into three separate streams:
To facilitate the collection of organic waste, all Town residential properties with three or fewer dwelling units have been supplied with a green two wheeled compost container. The benefits of the separation program are numerous. Springhills' participation in the program is extending the life of the Cumberland Central Landfill Facility at Little Forks and has dramatically increased the amount of material being reused, recycled or utilized as compost. Not only has this reduced Springhills' carbon footprint but has also helped to reduce the overall cost of solid waste collection. All participating citizens are to be congratulated! Important Dates: Christmas Tree Collection - January 17, 2011 Construction and Demolition Debris (C &D) will not be collected at curbside and must be delivered to the Little Forks facility by the resident.
